« On ne devrait jamais quitter Montauban », maugréait Lino Ventura dans Les Tontons Flingueurs . Mais, à défaut d'y habiter, on peut passer un peu de temps dans cette ville, rosissant de ses briques, située à 50 km au nord de Toulouse . Bâtie en 1144 en surplomb du Tarn, c'est un peu la bastide témoin, le prototype reconnaissable à ses rues taillées au cordeau. Sitôt construite, sitôt ville de négoce comme en témoigne déjà la place Nationale , cœur de la cité bruissante de tous les corps de métiers qui occupent les arcades ; couvert du blé, couvert du drapier. Au centre, l'inévitable pilori, ôté à la révolution seulement. Montauban s'enrichit peu à peu ; elle connaît aussi bien des vicissitudes. Il faut dire que la guerre de Cent Ans passe par là, que les Anglais s'y trouvent plutôt bien installés. Réforme et contre-réforme. L'Edit de Nantes, la proclame "place de sûreté" puis - châtiment divin ricanent certains - la peste noire la foudroie... N'empêche, elle a su conserver quelques beaux trophées architecturaux : l'église Saint-Jacques, avec son clocher toulousain, le pont vieux et ses sept arches dotées de becs et de percées ; la forteresse, commencée par les Anglais et transformée jusqu'au XVIIème siècle ; la cathédrale, symbole de la puissante royauté catholique ; l'ancien collège, aménagé par les Jésuites et qui servit de fonderie de canons durant La Révolution… Montauban se relève encore. Cette fois, c'est le commerce du drap qui la rend florissante, un temps seulement. Napoléon la récompense en la désignant chef-lieu de département ? Cela n'empêchera pas le déclin, inéluctable, de l'industrie drapière. Qu'importe ! Montauban vante depuis ses héritiers artistiques : Ingres père – il est décorateur – mais surtout son peintre de fils, bien sûr, auxquels succédera le sculpteur Bourdelle. Vous avez dit artistique ? Allez, on vous fait une confidence. Montauban, sans se comparer à Miami, peut se vanter de posséder de nombreuses réalisations Art Déco. Des villas cossues de la ville basse, comme la Maïtena, mais aussi la cité Pereire - à l'origine, des logements sociaux pour cheminots - ou, à condition de traverser le Tarn, plusieurs bâtiments dans le quartier de Villebourbon, de la gare routière à l'ancien club nautique. Il a été construit en même temps que le canal de Garonne mais ne bénéficie pas de la même notoriété. Fermé un temps à la navigation et totalement rénové, on peut en suivre le chemin de halage sur ses 11 km et admirer ainsi les 10 belles maisons éclusières qui le ponctuent.

Our activities take place between 9.30 a.m. and 12 p.m. in the morning, 1.30 p.m. to 4 p.m. or 4 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. in the afternoon. Our schedules are adaptable according to the attendance and the availability of our instructors.
